Day 1 – 22 May 2019:

London – Marrakech – Imlil

Fly from London to Marrakech. On arrival there’s a 2 hour transfer to the heart of the Atlas Mountains. En-route enjoy a first glimpse of the rugged peaks we will encounter during the challenge. On arrival at the Berber village of Imlil (1780m) we check in, freshen up and check our kit. We overnight at our hotel in Imlil. This evening we hear more about the challenge ahead.

Day 2 – 23 May 2019:

Imlil – Tamatert – Toubkal Hut (8 hours trekking approx.)

An early start this morning. We meet our mules and muleteers, all the luggage and camping equipment is sent on ahead to the first night’s camp. Trek out of Imlil through a picturesque and remote landscape for a one hour warm up trek to camp in the village of Tamatert (1800m). From here we’re bound for Aremd (1900m). After an hour or so we start walking through the valley of the Assof n’Tafklast River to Marabout Chamarouch (2310m). There are sweeping views of the Atlas Mountains and it will feel a million miles from everyday life. From Aremd it is a further 2 hour trek over steeper terrain until a well deserved lunch stop where we enjoy local delicacies and of course the obligatory mint tea! After lunch we ascend for 2 hours to Toubkal Hut (3200m) where we camp next to the stream that flows down into the valley.

Day 3 – 24 May 2019:

Toubkal Summit (10 hours trekking approx.)

After a very early breakfast we set off at dawn to start the summit climb on the steep and rocky slopes of Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest mountain at 4167m. In and around the foothills of Toubkal are numerous Berber villages that cling to the side of the mountain appearing to defy gravity. It is this glorious panorama that we trek through on our way to the peak of Toubkal, or, as it is known locally, ‘Adrar n’dem’ (Mountain of Mountains). There will be a huge sense of achievement when we reach the top. On a clear day there are stunning views over the surrounding High Atlas Mountains to the Sahara Desert in the far distance. After a few photographs at the top, we begin the descent – an initial 3 hours to our lunch stop and then another 2 hours to the camp at Marabout Chamarouch – our last night in the wilderness.

Day 4 – 25 May 2019:

Toubkal Descent – Marrakech (2 – 3 hours trekking approx.)

Having climbed Mount Toubkal from the west, our descent will follow the same path down, it is a fast descent and should take 2-3 hours. A final 200 metre descent brings us to the road head at Imlil where we celebrate the end of the trek at approximately 10am. After an early lunch we transfer back to Marrakech where the afternoon is free to explore its colourful souks and bazaars. This evening we come together for a traditional feast and reflect on an extraordinary few days.

Day 5 – 26 May 2019:

Homeward Bound

We transfer to the airport for the return flight from Marrakech to London with memories of a fantastic Mount Toubkal trek for charity.
